The best games of Gamelab 2018
The Gamelab 2018 is not only an encounter with some of the main personalities of the video game industry: it is a unique opportunity for Spanish developers, who celebrate their big party and show the progress of their main projects to the media and publishers that are given appointment in Hospitalet. We explain which ones we like the most.
Probably, we are talking about the great videogame party in Spanish territory, hence nobody wants to be left out of the event. The visit of 3DJuegos to the Gamelab of Hospitalet, Barcelona, has resulted in interesting conversations with representatives of the industry such as Shawn Layden , Amy Hennig or Angie Smets , but has it been the only thing we have done there? Of course not! We have also attended the delivery of the National Video Game Awards and we have been able to try some of the main titles that aspire to take the prized Fleas in future editions of the event.
Spanish artists dare with any genre, and the exhibition of talent shown in Gamelab 2018 is nothing more than a new and pleasant news about the state of grace of many of the main home teams. There are many reasons to be optimistic with the present collection of video games: the titles that will compete for the prizes of the congresses and events that take place in the coming months are titles that will join our collections of PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and mobile soon to stay. Do you want to know them?
3 minutes to Midnight
Scarecrow Studios (PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android)
A graphic adventure that aims to rescue all the elements that made the most classic LucasArts productions great in the nineties. 3 Minutes to Midnight tells the story of a young American woman of the 40s, Betty, and a perfidious mayor who came to power in the city thanks to dark arts. The production invites you to expect science fiction and the most hooligan and carefree humor with great two-dimensional graphics and a great finish that will take advantage of a handful of platforms. It will reach PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.
Beyond its 100% Lucas design and playable finish, 3 Minutes to Midnight promises a story with more than 30 characters, a handful of puzzles and an intricate plot. The software is very advanced in its development: it was solid and we could enjoy a demo that lasted for more than an hour, which did not lack the grotesque accessories made in Lucas, family dramas or a girl with multiple personality who ran some keys that we needed. The old feeling of the adventures of MS-DOS with a current visual touch and the height of the systems in which it is launched.
What awaits the 35 characters that make up the catalog of crazy protagonists of the game? Scarecrow Studio guarantees floods, a necronomicon, dubious political careers and raccoons with rage. What more could you want?
Blasphemous
The Game Kitchen (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, Linux)
The Game Kitchen studio closed a luxury Gamelab 2018: it won the Best Game in Development of the National Video Game Industry Awards, so they left with their first Flea to Seville. His presence in Hospitalet resulted in the latest build that the video game's patrons have been able to prove, presenting amazing animations and game mechanics that will delight the most classic Metroidvania fans. The religious symbolism, the grotesque enemies and the protagonist's movements marry in a decrepit and unique environment.
The game is still in a very early stage of its development, but there are many clues that make us think that the production promises to be up to the good productions of the genre. Beyond the attack movements, the parry and the elusive ones help the battle system to be varied and spectacular, with great variety in the threats and enemies that respond to specific attacks and patterns on the part of the player. Very promising in every way, but we will have to be patient to play it on our favorite systems.
The pressure on the study is obvious: Blasphemous is, without a doubt, the most wanted Spanish videogame of the moment, so it is natural that the studio is noticing the pressure. However, the work continues with the feedback of the patrons and the production points high.
Melbits World
Melbot Studios (PS4)
It is a candidate for everything in the next industry awards. The Playlink videojuego Madrid has been placed on the grid of the second batch of games of mobile technology of PS4, and it is not surprising if we take into account its extensive playable and technical category. The isometric perspective is reminiscent of Jon Ritman classics and the recent Captain Toad, but it takes today's mobile technology to make a puzzle game in which players of all ages can participate, either to collaborate and get maps finished or to importune and have fun at the controls of the software.
Beyond the playable, Melbits World is a production that aims to get you out on the street too: you can capture new melbits created procedurally in the streets of your town to add them to the quarry of players that you have on your PS4. A kind of evolution of the mythical concept of the Chaos of Sonic Adventure or the legendary Tamagotchi? Maybe, but the fact is that the production has very good ideas, an endearing design and a very promising level construction that promises laughter, mobile through.
We know that Shawn Layden, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios was impressed with the game, and it does not surprise us: it can be one of the games that uses the PlayLink technology of PS4 more organically. It's going to be a big hit.
Profane
Overpowered Team (PC)
Old acquaintances of 3DJuegos, the developers of the Overpowered Team did not lose the opportunity to take their promising videogame to the Gamelab of Barcelona. It is a perfect mix between bullet hell and boss-rush in top view: a battle against dozens of bullets on screen, a giant enemy and time, which is subtracted as we receive impacts. The result? It's still as promising as it was a few months ago and has shown some novelty, like new (and devilish) routines for enemies, another enemy's final boss and scenarios.
The new enemy, in fact, was the tutorial that serves to explain the operation of the software control developed in the ESNE classrooms, but it contributed something that we could not prove in its previous build: new scenarios and powers that helped the enemies to protect yourself from the player's bullets. We already saw that the rivals of the game defended themselves with something more than the typical bullets of games like the present, but the new skills shown in the tutorial do nothing but show a new playable layer that, without a doubt, will be explored in higher levels of Profane.
As we said a few weeks ago, we talked about a final project that aspires to much more than a very good note for the file of its developers: it aspires to be in the libraries of many players on the planet. Time to time.
Super Dodgeball Beats
Final Boss Games (Switch, PC)
My favorite videogame of the fair: pleasant surprise. Yes Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! and the mythical Super Dodgeball of Technos had a child after a crazy drunkenness in a hotel in Las Ramblas, would be born Super Dodgeball Beats. A great mix between a prisoner ball and a musical videogame with designs inspired by Japanese animation and great melodies for the identity of the videogame. It is expected to be released by the end of this year on platforms such as Steam or Nintendo Switch, and I believe that it can be a real bombshell with an appropriate price and if it is among the nostalgic ones of the Inis game.
Two main game modes: a career mode and a versus mode. The first puts us in the shoes of one of the teams of the game, with which we must advance against other rivals who want to win the prisoner league. As in so many musical games, a bar limits how well or badly we are doing the song; if we survive we will advance a new round, and if we are among the first eight at the end of the league we will reach the playoffs to win the tournament. The versus mode confronts us with a rival in local mode, and our expertise with rhythm will define our victory.
We can use different powers during the fight, which will help us to bother the opponent with traps that make it impossible to see their part of the map or powers that will petrify the opposing team. Colorful scenes, great animations and great artistic and playable inspiration. Excellent ingredients Do not lose sight of it.
