Will Volta have GDDR6 memory? A recent agreement indicates that yes
Shares of SK Hynix are up 6% after the big deal with Nvidia.
South Korean memory maker SK Hynix has seen its shares rise following the appearance of reports that it has made a large deal with Nvidia , bringing its shares to 94,000 won, its highest value since 2001. The company is working to begin the large-scale manufacturing of its GDDR6 memories, which it is rumored will be key to the future of Nvidia, because they offer greater performance and efficiency than the current GDDR5X .
This agreement includes a large supply from SK Hynix for a long time. Keep in mind that Nvidia is expected to make use of both GDDR6 and HBM memories for their future graphics cards, and the South Korean company has the capacity to produce both. As it is a new generation of memories with a greater bandwidth, its price is higher, so it would be logical that these memories went to top-end cards such as Volta. In the latest catalog of the manufacturer you can find an 8 GB GDDR6 chipthat supports speeds of 14 Gbps to 1.35 V and 12 Gbps to 1.25 V. Nvidia already manages 11 Gbps in its GDDR5X, so it would be consistent to aim high and stay with the fastest option. There are six days left for Computex , so maybe part of our doubts will be solved then .
